The Folio Society

St Mary’s Books and Prints has recently acquired a large collection of Folio Society books and is delighted to be able to offer over 300 titles for sale. The Folio Society volumes are an ideal alternative to often rare and pricey editions of literary classics and significant non-fiction titles.

The significance of the founding of the Folio Society in 1947 cannot be understated for it is due to the work of the Folio society in re-issuing important works that some of the most influential and thought provoking titles ever to be published are now available to the general public.

A key feature of the Folio Society publications are the delightful and wholly appropriate illustrations which accompany virtually every book to be re-issued - such illustrations are often by renowned artists such as George Cruikshank and Roman Pisareu. All Folio books are today issued in slip cases for single volumes and boxes for sets.

The private collection acquired by St Mary’s Books covers a vast range of subject areas including amongst others diaries, eyewitness accounts of major historical events (such as The Gulag Archipelago) , commentaries on historical events (e.g. The Great Philosophers of the Ancient World), travelogues, collected short stories and much loved literary classics (Joseph Conrad, Raymond Chandler, Graham Greene, Elizabeth Gaskell and many others). Many of these titles would usually only be available to subscribers and members of the Folio Society.

These volumes are in virtually fine condition both internally and externally with no signs of wear and thus are ideal for gift presentation (perhaps an ideal early purchase for Christmas!).
